Humanitarian aid, refugees, the ‘undeclared work’, and unpaid pension billions owed to Ukrainians

Refugees have cost tens of billions so far. But most of the money will come back to the Czech Republic on working Ukrainians

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the end of February, 474 000 refugees have arrived in the Czech Republic and received temporary protection. A third of them have subsequently found work here. In the end, the aid to Ukrainian refugees cost the Czech Republic less than half of the estimated CZK 50 billion that the government had originally counted on. Moreover, tens of thousands of Ukrainians began working after their arrival, and some of the money is now returning to the domestic economy in the form of taxes and levies. In total, more than a third of the cost of the aid has already been returned to the state, with additional money paid into social and health funds by their employers.
