They went to jail for the shamanic elixir. Absurd, experts say, and call for legalization
The Kordys were taken away by police in October 2020 for holding ceremonies with the psychedelic drink Ayahuasca. The court sent them to prison for 8.5 and 5.5 years. But experts say the sentence is unfair. Psychedelics help in the treatment of mental illness and have no addictive potential, they argue, calling for a rethink of the law that now equates the substances with cocaine or heroin.
