Pavel didn’t want to meet Fico. Only Čaputová had to intervene
The first foreign visit to Prague of the new Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico almost ended in an international scandal. According to Lidovky, the president did not want to meet with Fico. The reason was allegedly that the Slovak politician did not refrain from using vulgar words against Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová at a meeting of his supporters in Nitra last year, which were shouted by a crowd of Smer-SD supporters. “Pavel did not want to do it because of his friendship with Čaputová. He did not like it,” a source familiar with the details of the Slovak prime minister’s trip told Lidovky. Ironically, it was Čaputová who prevented the diplomatic “crash”. She herself intervened with Pavel to get the president to accept Fico in Prague.
