Pensioners beat inflation, then someone started doing the math and found they were down 8%

Pensioners win in inflation, but indexations are a problem for the budget

The government gives money to all parties, to firefighters, to soldiers and of course in terms of mandated spending, to pensioners. They are likely to receive an extraordinary increase in their pensions next year, in addition to the traditional January indexation. However, many experts believe that this is a problem in the long term. According to the National Budget Council (NBC), the extraordinary valorisation will burden the state budget with around CZK 20 billion extra, which the government’s 2023 economic plan does not provide for.

Pensioners are not happy

If anyone is going to be the winner of recent years, it should be the pensioners. Or so it seems from the statements of some politicians and economists. Pensioners were the only ones whose pensions were increased by the government to protect them from inflation. So much so, in fact, that they have become the target of criticism: it is pensioners who are said to be taking away their children’s future, because their pensions are putting a strain on the budget. Pensioner inflation, on the other hand, is calculated to have exceeded well over 20 per cent at its highest point, a level that all households on average only come close to.
