Migrants in the army don’t just end up in Russia, young Czechoslovaks who wanted to go to the West ended up in the East

Young Czechoslovaks wanted to go to the West, France sent them to Vietnam to fight the communists

It is an almost unknown chapter of history. The largest military deployment of Czechoslovaks since the Second World War took place in an unlikely place – Southeast Asia. For nine years the French fought the Vietnamese communist movement there. Over 1,600 Czechs and Slovaks joined the war on the French side, and over three hundred were killed. These were young men who wanted to escape to the West after the Communist takeover.

Thousands of migrants detained in St. Petersburg, recruited for war, server reports

Police in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city, detained thousands of migrants on New Year’s Eve in order to forcibly recruit them into Russia’s war against Ukraine, Novaya Gazeta Yevropa reported today, citing an unnamed source in the Russian Interior Ministry. According to the source, at least 1,500 of the detained men have already signed a contract with the Defense Ministry. The St. Petersburg-based Fontanka news server reported on New Year’s Day that some 3,000 foreigners were brought to police stations overnight.
