Chess player Wilhelm Steinitz was neither Czech nor a Czech citizen – but at least he was born in Prague

The weirdo who single-handedly defeated Russia. He had potions in his suitcase, he was afraid he’d be poisoned

In the atmosphere of the Cold War, the reigning world chess champion from the USSR, Boris Spassky, and the American Bobby Fischer fought for the title of world chess champion in the summer of 1972 in Reykjavik, Iceland. To this day it is one of the most famous duels in the history of the sport. Fischer became a celebrity, the “Einstein of chess” and the first American born in the USA to occupy the chess throne. In fact, the Prague-born Wilhelm Steinitz, who became an American citizen in 1888, was also world champion from 1886 to 1894.
