Where are the Czech Nobelists? The Poles, Austrians and Hungarians have them
Looking at the annual awarding of the so-called Nobel Prizes, many people will certainly wonder why the Czechs are almost never among them. Although we may have many reservations and remarks about the process of selecting the laureates, especially in the so-called “soft” fields (peace, literature, partly economics), we cannot help but notice that our performance in this respect is rather poor. But it is not only weak in absolute terms, but also in relative terms. Most Nobel Prizes have been awarded since 1901. The Czech Republic, in all its forms (part of Austria-Hungary and then Czechoslovakia, a protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, again part of Czechoslovakia and the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, and finally as an independent state), has won a total of six Nobel Prizes.
