The Vrakuňa landfill of Istrochem is slowly destroying the most fertile part of Slovakia, called the Žitný ostrov (Rye Island)

Slovak disaster of the century: the Vrakuna landfill will soon poison the Rye Island

A catastrophe like no other. This is what one could call the long-term problem with the Vrakun landfill. Toxic substances from the site have leaked into the groundwater, which flows towards Rye Island. However, the problem is more complex than it might at first appear, and it does not seem to be resolved any time soon. The Vrakun landfill is not news to any Bratislava resident. It is a long-standing problem that has not been solved for a long time, and it has assumed astronomical proportions in the meantime. It is a kind of a separate chapter of pollution from Istrochem, which has poisoned not only its premises but also the surrounding area. The landfill is leaking quantities of toxic substances into the groundwater, which is flowing towards Rye Island.
