The Fate of the Volhynian Bohemians
In the 19th century, almost 16,000 Czechs left Austria-Hungary for Tsarist Russia. They were able to acquire land cheaply, set up businesses, have their own education and their own self-government. The fate of this minority in the 20th century was tragic, as they found themselves caught between several millstones. During the Second World War, its members enlisted en masse in the Czechoslovak army.
