The city of Prague does not have money for flats, but it wants to build a new philharmonic for 375 million euros; elsewhere, even a significantly lower amount is a problem

He can’t afford flats, but he’s building a €5 million altar, beats the mayor of Lisbon

Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas is facing criticism for spending more than five million euros (118.8 million crowns) on the construction of an altar at which Pope Francis will celebrate Mass during this year’s World Youth Day. The event will take place in the Portuguese capital from 1 to 6 August. The daily Observador reported that the town hall has hired Mota-Engil, the country’s largest construction firm, to build the altar. The altar will cost 4.2 million euros. Another €1 million is the cost of the foundations for the altar’s roof, which was awarded to the firm Oliveiras S.A., according to the official public procurement database.

The construction of the Vltava Philharmonic in Holešovice could begin in 2027, and a detailed architectural study of this cultural complex has already been completed. The documentation of the building, which will cost about CZK 12 billion, was presented on Monday morning by the Prague City Hall management and the project team.
