Government plans to urgently reduce penalties for corruption
Several people close to Smer are facing punishment, and the coalition’s programme statement suggests easing the rates for economic crime. Shorter sentences for corruption are not a political issue for the first time. Already in the last parliamentary term, an unsuccessful attempt to reduce them was made by the then non-attached MP Tomáš Taraba, now environment minister and deputy prime minister in Robert Fico’s fourth government.
