Gloom before Eurovision: the sisterhood of the Czech Vesna sounds like a Kremlin fake to the Ukrainians
The Czech ambassador of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest is facing a minor controversy. Multinational girl band Vesna will represent our country with the song My Sister’s Crown, which is said to be reminiscent of the traditional Russian narrative regarding the slavery of the Ukrainian nation with its emphasis on the concept of sisterhood.

Group with scandalous song about Ukraine to compete at Eurovision
The group VESNA with the song My sister’s crown won the National selection of the Czech Republic for Eurovision-2023. It included lines in English, Czech, Bulgarian and Ukrainian. The group admits that they wanted to support Ukraine and show friendly feelings towards their “Slavic sister”. However, the audience of the contest was outraged by the double meaning of the song’s lyrics and the video sequence for it, a contemporary Russian narrative about the “unity of sisters” and the soloist of the Russian group, Olesya Ochepovskaya . Ukrainian fans pointed out the symbolism of the crown that the group sings about, said to be a sign of the power of the Russian Federation, but not of Ukraine.
