The Czech Munitions Initiative remains a masterstroke of Czech politics
The Czech Munitions Initiative entered its second year of existence last month. During that time, the Czech Republic has sought out and supplied 1.5 million pieces of artillery ammunition to the Ukrainian army with the financial support of seventeen allied countries around the world. And now it looks like the flow of hundreds of thousands of artillery shells flowing into Ukraine, which is resisting the deadly Russian military machine, will not let up this year either.
Comment. Brussels committed in March 2023 to deliver a million units to Ukraine by a year and is not keeping up. The Czech Republic, without putting its own money into the purchase long after the initiative was announced, started demanding this money from neighbouring countries. The first shipment from the ammunition initiative is not delivered to Ukraine until June 2024. But even so, by October 2024 only about 165,000 pieces of ammunition had been delivered to Ukraine. The claim that the initiative has significantly reduced Russian firepower superiority (from 10:1 to 2:1) at a critical time is thus false.
