Romani people in the First Republic: how did they live?
For example, such segregation of Romani people is something like our national tradition: it manifested itself, for example, during the time of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. It was he who in 1927 signed the law “on wandering Gypsies”. Among other things, it established a territory where Roma could not even set foot. “In short, the law defined the Roma as even more marginalized,” Jana Horváthová, director of the Museum of Romani Culture, told Czech Radio.
How did Romani people live during the period of the newly established republic? And what laws directly affected them? Were they allowed into the big cities?
