Only a third of Slovaks would be willing to fight for their country
In Slovakia, there is a slight increase in concern about the economic consequences of the war, especially about the rising prices and the economic crisis. However, concerns about the war in Ukraine also remain at high levels seven weeks after its start. Only 27.5 percent of all respondents (and a third of men) would be willing to fight for Slovakia if there were a war. The willingness to fight for Slovakia is related to trust in some institutions as well as geopolitical preference for the West (EU, NATO). According to the international European Values Survey, the willingness to fight for the homeland in Slovakia was already very low compared to other European countries in 2017 and has now dropped even further.

The men who signed the declaration of refusal to perform extraordinary service would not have avoided serving their country anyway, according to Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď. There is a relatively large group of men in Slovakia who have a real fear of being called up by the state and sent to war. The law has such people in mind, and every year until the end of January it allows all those who refuse to even theoretically fight with arms to sign a so-called declaration of refusal to perform extraordinary service. This year, a record number of Slovaks filed the declaration. Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď claims that more than 40 thousand of them have done so. Just for comparison, last year less than 1,500 people did so, while in previous years the state accepted only hundreds of declarations.
