We are deeply sorry. The man ended up in a psychiatry after unlawful prosecution; after 13 years, the courts awarded him a record-breaking compensation
In June 2012, police unexpectedly came for then 23-year-old Josef P. Due to suspicions that he had embezzled five million Czech crowns, he ended up in pre-trial detention. However, the original charges soon collapsed. The case did go to court, but in September 2013, the court fully acquitted the young man and even suggested he may have been a victim himself. The prosecution, however, had tragic consequences for Josef P. After several weeks in custody, he suffered a breakdown and was hospitalized in a psychiatric facility, where he remains in treatment to this day. The Ministry of Justice and the courts long refused to apologize or pay him compensation.
