There were three pools of blood in the hall. 80 years ago, the Germans massacred Czech gendarmes
“I entered the room and saw four dead bodies on the floor. Three of them were lying with their feet towards me. They were gendarmes,” wrote 80 years ago the English journalist Sydney Morrell, who was the first journalist to reach the village of Habersbirk (now Habartov) in the Czech part of the Sudetenland, where on 13 September 1938 fanatical Sudeten Germans massacred a Czech gendarmerie station. “It was ridiculous and it was a lie, but it felt like dynamite,” wrote English journalist Sydney Morrell in his book I Saw the Crucifixion, in which he described the events leading up to the Munich Agreement.
