Slovaks fear low penalties for corruption, in the Czech Republic conditions for the same offence have been falling for years

‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ company condemned. Court imposes conditions and fines for subsidy fraud

The Olomouc branch of the Regional Court in Ostrava has handed down its verdict in the case of the Litovel company Hopax. The company had previously confessed to the European prosecutor that it had misused a CZK 45 million subsidy for the purchase of machines that the company had deliberately overpriced in its invoices. All the defendants have been sentenced to probation and fines, while the three accused companies are also banned from applying for subsidies in the coming years. The verdict is not yet in.

In Slovakia, people again protested against the abolition of the special prosecutor’s office

Protests in Slovakia continue in the new year. People again demonstrated against the abolition of the special prosecutor’s office. The rallies have been organised by three opposition parties since last December over a proposal by Prime Minister Robert Fico’s cabinet to abolish the elite prosecutor’s office or to reduce penalties for corruption and economic crime. This time, the opposition and civic activists have called protests in more than a dozen cities across the country.
