“Shut up, I can rape her now.” Female tourists in the Tatras face harassment and vulgarities
People pay hundreds of euros for a mountain guide. However, several women describe how they faced unpleasant comments in places where they were dependent on others. Lucia and her friends climbed Gerlachovský Peak together last year. It wasn’t a whim or a spur-of-the-moment decision. They grew up in the mountains and all three of them have extensive experience there. Despite that, they were taken aback by the behavior of two mountain guides. “I remember that inappropriate remarks and sexist humor were a part of the environment — not from everyone, but from many. There was a line, however, between humor and sexism or harassment,” says 34-year-old Lucia.
