“Thank you for paying in cash.” Fico’s transaction tax has reached even his electoral bastion
The district town of Čadca in northern Slovakia, near the Polish and Czech borders, is a stronghold of Robert Fico (Smer). Seven out of ten local inhabitants voted for the ruling parties Směr, Hlas, SNS or the far-right Republic. But the winning mood could soon change. “Our Prime Minister has taken a leaf out of the book of his Hungarian friends. There are two countries that have a transaction tax: us and the Hungarians,” complains a young Slovak woman.
