The riot police intervened at the Majáles. People rioted over the non-return of deposits for cups
The problem arose when the organisers told people that they had run out of cash to return the deposit cups. “You’re thieves,” people in Prague’s Letňany rioted when they found out they would not get their money back for the backed-up cups because the stalls had run out of cash. According to the audience, the organisation of the event, which was organised by Sherwood Digital, was completely underestimated. In fact, there were only two places where people could return such cups. In addition, they said, the cups could not be reused and so they had to pay a new deposit of CZK 70 for each new cup. “If someone didn’t want to stand in line to return the cups every time, by the end of the Majáles they had collected ten of them, so it’s not just 70 crowns, but several hundred,” said one of the visitors.
