How much do senior civil servants earn? Secret in the Czech Republic, just a few clicks on the web in Britain
In the UK, Canada, Russia, Chile or Slovakia, it is not a problem to find out what salaries and bonuses senior civil servants receive, unlike in the Czech Republic. In Slovakia, the information law gives the authorities no choice – they have to disclose the requested salaries. Even Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has issued a decree requiring high-ranking officials to disclose their income year after year. Only in the Czech Republic do the authorities still resist this. When Hospodarske noviny asked for information on the salaries and remuneration of senior civil servants, most ministries and state agencies provided only aggregate data for a few workers, citing that more detailed disclosure conflicts with data protection law. Yet the Supreme Administrative Court clearly said several months ago that such information should be publicly available. Just like in the world.
