Přemysl Šámal. Head of the Maffia and Chancellor to the Presidents
After the establishment of the independent republic, he became the head of the capital city, Prague. However, at the beginning of 1919, he accepted an offer from T. G. Masaryk and became the head of his presidential office. For the next nineteen years, he served as chancellor to Presidents Masaryk and Beneš, acting as a discreet yet key coordinator of personal relationships and networks of influence that turned “the Castle” into a power center operating outside official political structures. After the Munich Agreement and Beneš’s resignation, Šámal stepped down from his position as chancellor and withdrew from public life. However, he never accepted the occupation of post-Munich Czecho-Slovakia.
