Building cheaply and quickly didn’t pay off; 46 people died when the department store collapsed
A regular workday in the center of Prague turned into one of the biggest construction disasters in Czech history in 1928. The unfinished department store of Josef Jakesch on Na Poříčí Street unexpectedly collapsed, burying dozens of people under the rubble. In the end, 46 people died in the wreckage and another 30 were injured. Today, a hotel stands on the site of the tragedy.
