Migration and Integration in the Czech Republic: Policy Advances and the Brake of Populism
The territory of today’s Czech Republic was under Austrian control even before it became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867. Between 1850 and 1914, approximately 1.5 million people emigrated, most of them agricultural and industrial workers. The majority moved to the United States, but also to Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Hungary, Russia, and countries of the former Yugoslavia, in search of economic opportunities.
