A rare Ganz tram that survived over 100 years – even the Russians – was hidden in the Levoča Hills. Locals set it on fire

A sad end for one tram – a piece of our history burned to the ground

A rare Ganz tram hidden in the Levoča Hills has burned to ashes. A 109-year-old tram was destroyed by fire in the former Javorina military training area. Ironically, it never operated there — in fact, there were never even any tracks in the area. To this day, we still refer to the site as the ‘Russian camp’ in our line of work. It was after the arrival of Russian troops, sometime between 1968 and 1970, that support facilities for the Russian army began to be built in this location, said Michal Dudák, director of the Military Forests and Estates in Kežmarok.
