Diagnosis: Knowing things Babiš did not know is essential. And not a sign of the elite
“To my surprise, after the disgrace of Andrej Babiš, there were also opinions that education is not very necessary or that a general overview is actually useless,” writes Josef Veselka in his regular column “Diagnosis”. If a public figure allows himself to be tested on the basic knowledge of 15-year-old schoolchildren and fails, then there can be nothing but a society-wide halo. In other words, a disgrace, because more than half of our adult population has graduated from high school at some point in their lives, which to some extent ensures that the works of Čapek or Hašek are sufficiently familiar to them.

Chechens or Chechens? Americans still groping on social media
Two explosions rocked downtown Boston, USA, just metres from the finish line of a marathon attended by thousands of people. The confusion between Chechnya and the Czech Republic, which has puzzled social media users since Friday’s action against the alleged perpetrators of the Boston bombing, is now being set straight by the US and Russian media. The Czech ambassador to the US, Petr Gandalovic, described the mistake as an “extremely unfortunate misunderstanding” in a separate statement.
