Shattered pieces of Jewish tombstones can still be found today in the pavement of Wenceslas Square

There may be up to 10,000 stones from Jewish tombstones on Wenceslas Square

The reconstruction of Wenceslas Square reveals new pieces of Jewish tombstones that were used as paving stones in the centre of Prague in the 1980s. At the end of May, some 2,000 of them had already been found, and conservationists estimate that there may be as many as 10,000 in total. About 80 stones with texts are already on display in the Jerusalem Synagogue. Whether the stones from the Jewish tombstones will actually appear on Wenceslas Square was still uncertain at the beginning of May, when the reconstruction began. However, already during the first days of the reconstruction of the most important square in Prague, hundreds of such stones began to be found. Today, there are already thousands, and the unexpected number has surprised even the Jewish community itself.
