Famous Žilina-style cod in mayonnaise
It’s a time, but you don’t forget such an experience. We changed trains in Žilina, the connection was 3/4 hour late. We stopped for a bite to eat and a lemonade. To the station buffet which was called a restaurant. Even today many things are named differently. There were seven of us in line. During the 1/4 hour we crawled to the first place the lady behind the counter made a couple of runs. Each time she came back she cleaned up the used plates that people had put on the counter in the meantime.
It took forever. When it was my turn I asked for a lemonade and probably the only usable food on the menu, cod in mayonnaise. I don’t know if it was the prematurely expressed wish or the unfinished cod that was on the last plate the lady still had in her hand.. or the fact that she felt at home after spending all those years there. With a deft flick of her hand, she dumped the contents of the unfinished plate into a bowl from which she dispensed fresh cod. With the same spoon she stirred the contents and asked… How much?
