Up to 15 years in prison for homosexuality. Iraq passes toughest law yet against LGBTQ people
Iraq’s parliament on Saturday approved a new law targeting same-sex relationships that carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison. The law has been criticised by human rights advocates and the US State Department. Reuters and AFP report… The original proposal even included the death penalty. According to the parliament, the aim of the law is to protect religious values. Rights advocates have condemned the bill as the latest attack on the LGBTQ community in Iraq. It has also been criticised by the NGO Amnesty International, which AFP said described it as a “violation of basic human rights.”
