The Middle Ages aren’t over, it’s okay to spell foreign women’s names, so we keep adding patriarchal endings

It’s right to punctuate the names of foreign women, but there are exceptions, says linguist Oliva
An era of history ended this year. That’s when Britain’s longest-serving monarch, Elizabeth II, died in September. And almost overnight, Prince Charles became King Charles III, explains linguist Karel Oliva. This indirectly affected the Czech language as well. “According to centuries-old custom, we translate the names of monarchs – out of respect for them. Only with Spain, for some mysterious reason, is it different,” says Karel Oliva. It was “queen”, alongside terms like “dosimeter”, “war” or “desolates”, that was a word that often resonated among readers this year.
