Why Slovak Fico hates Ukraine
It all dates back to 2009, when Fico was prime minister of Slovakia. On 7 January of that year, a long-running dispute over natural gas between Russia and Ukraine broke out and the flow of Russian gas through Ukraine to EU countries stopped. The crisis caught Slovakia in the middle of winter. Factories were forced to close and the disruption cost the Slovak economy around EUR 100 million every day. A desperate Fico called both Vladimir Putin, then Russian prime minister, and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to restore gas supplies.
