It’s 10 a.m., and in frost-clenched Bratislava we shake hands with a man who has been reduced to the number 280 for nine years. Halid is a Uighur and one bad thought, namely that he would rather be detained by the Americans than the Chinese, has ruined his life. The Americans sent him to Guantánamo, where he was quickly acquitted, but it took another twelve years before he could start a new life in Slovakia. But it is not without problems, as the Slovaks have not granted him citizenship despite promises.
