The Gift for Putin project joked about the death of Russian tourists. “Unfortunate,” says its founder

Last week, a post by the Czech initiative Gift for Putin mocking the deaths of Russian tourists in a submarine accident in Egypt caused a stir on social media. “There was a winking smiley face, it’s borderline, but it’s humour,” argues the author of the post, Martin Ondráček, who handles the project’s communications.

Chaos and screaming, water rushing in. A camera captured a submarine crash in Hurghada

Newly released video from the wrecked cruise submarine Sindbad shows how the vessel began to sink near the Egyptian resort of Hurghada. In the footage, terrified tourists can be heard screaming as water quickly rushes on board. Six foreigners – all Russians – died in the accident. Another 39 people were rescued.
