Absolutely magical. They carved an ear, a mouth and eyes into the granite above the flooded quarries.
This part of the memorial is a huge ear carved into the rock, symbolizing eavesdropping and listening. The name refers to the character of the secret policeman Bretschneider from Jaroslav Hašek’s novel The Fate of the Good Soldier Švejk. Bretschneider’s ear is a reminder of how people can become victims of spying and the consequences this can have for their privacy and freedom. More than twenty years ago, a group of young stonemasons decided to carve a set of three reliefs into the rock walls of the quarries in Lipnice nad Sázavou.
