A doctor summarized how bribes work in eastern Slovakia
“I am sick of colleagues who take bribes. I hate it. If I was in a situation where I could prove it, I would turn the doctor in without blinking an eye and he would not touch the patient for the rest of his life,” says a doctor from the east of Slovakia. Doctors take money without shame, he says. “In one hospital cafeteria in our east, they even sell decorative envelopes, and they come in two varieties. The more decorated one is for the chief doctor, the other one for the ordinary doctor,” Since behind the buffet glass, a price tag with the words “money envelope” is stuck next to the horalki, candies or baguettes, patients are clear about what is expected of them.
