The state’s property stock totals 1.5 million properties, but the Czech population lacks about 100,000 affordable flats

Selling state assets as a recipe for incompetence and omnipotence of politicians

The Ministry of Finance commissioned the Office for State Representation in Property Affairs to prepare an overview of real estate that the state does not need. According to the office, about 1.5 million properties belong to state institutions and enterprises and it is not clear what they are actually used for. The unneeded real estate will apparently be ‘dumped’ on the market and the money raised will – as it has done many times in the past – be used to plug one of the endless budget holes and holes, without actually helping anything.

One million Czechs are at risk of housing distress. Municipalities should help, but it won’t be enough

According to the Ministry of Regional Development, more than one tenth of the Czech population may be affected by housing unaffordability. The state is looking for solutions in the housing funds of municipalities and cities. However, the pace of their expansion will not improve the problem in the foreseeable future. Rising costs, combined with limited supply on the market and slow construction, have significantly worsened the availability of housing in recent years. And according to the Property Index by the consultancy Deloitte, the Czech Republic is almost the worst in this respect in Europe.
