Why does the lion in the Czech state emblem have two tails? Certainly not because it symbolizes heroism or the rule of father and son

Science for children: why does the lion in the Czech state emblem have two tails?

Why do we have a lion in our coat of arms and where did its second tail come from? The lion has been associated with Bohemia since about the middle of the 12th century. However, Prince Vladislav II obtained a silver lion for his family coat of arms, but with only one tail. Where did the second tail come from? And which country has a unicorn in its coat of arms? The first evidence of a two-tailed lion in the coat of arms, which cannot be disputed, dates back to 1247. Wenceslas I’s son, Přemysl Otakar II, became heir to the throne and Margrave of Moravia, and the second lion’s tail is said to symbolise the co-rule of father and son. Přemysl Otakar then kept the coat of arms and coat of arms even after he became King of Bohemia.

Pfälzer Löwe, or when the two-tailed lions broke up in 1190

Pfälzer Löwe – The Palatine lion is a common figure in heraldry (see also: Lion as a heraldic animal). It was originally part of the Wittelsbach family coat of arms and is now found in many coats of arms of municipalities, districts and states in southern Germany, Alsace and Innviertel. Identical to the lion of the Palatinate is the lion depicted in the coats of arms of the provincial governors of Weida, Gera and Plauen. Before that, the Hohenstauf Count Palatine Conrad, father-in-law of Henry the Elder, had coins with the lion’s image minted around 1190.
