Complicated circumstances are forcing Czech Railways to modify old locomotives from the late 1970s at the cost of new ones

Putting up to 105 million into refurbishing an old locomotives? The new tender is attracting attention, but Czech Railways has several reasons

Still needed: since the end of the 1970s, the 754 series fast locomotives have been indispensable for Czech Railways, pulling these fast trains from Brno to Jihlava. The planned reconstruction is to confirm this. Czech Railways announced a remarkable tender this week: they want to have up to 30 diesel locomotives of the 754 series from the late 1970s and early 1980s reconstructed. The announced price is particularly remarkable: 105 million per unit – almost the same as brand new electric locomotives cost not long ago. But according to Jiří Ješeta, the deputy general director of ČD, the whole thing is far more complicated.
