Every Czech drinks an average of 186 litres of alcohol-containing beverages a year, according to statistics from the Czech Statistical Office. The popularity of alcohol in the Czech Republic is growing. While twenty years ago the average Czech consumed 8.2 litres of 100% alcohol per year, according to the latest data from the Czech Statistical Office from 2007, he or she now drinks 10.4 litres of pure ethanol per year. Consumption in the Czech Republic has thus increased by a third since 1989. According to statistics, every Czech, including newborn babies, consumes half a litre of alcoholic beverages every day. Czechs are most fond of beer, but over the past 20 years they have also become more accustomed to drinking wine, whose consumption has increased by 37 percent since 1989.
