Czech Historical Magazine 03/2018: Did the Slovaks want to be part of the new republic?
Slovakia urgently needed Czech support – military support against the Hungarian Red Army, medical support, because the state of medical care in Upper Hungary was catastrophic in 1918, and economic support, because the Hungarian state neglected it. Slovakia desperately needed a lot of infrastructural investment and business support. Above all, however, Slovakia needed help to build schools quickly, and an up-to-date contingent of professionals in all fields was needed to get the country up and running. Slovakia, from where the Hungarian bureaucracy and virtually all professional forces (including railway workers) had fled south, desperately needed intellectuals of all disciplines.
