“Worse than prison.” 40 days of Egyptian Ahmed’s hardship in Czech detention
Detention centres are part of the repressive migration system in the Czechia. However, it is precisely these detention centres that are criticised for not respecting basic human rights. Refugees are isolated in them, they have no information about their situation, and they are threatened with involuntary deportation. The Egyptian political activist Ahmed spent 40 days in one of them. In the first months after the invasion of Ukraine began, the Czech political representation tried to present the reception of people fleeing the war as a moral duty and a challenge to be overcome. Gradually, however, the conditions began to tighten, the services offered were reduced, and racism began to take hold, especially among Roma refugees.
