Former members of the consumer cooperative Včela want billions from the state
The dispute over the multi-billion-dollar assets of the former consumer cooperative Včela is heading to the EU institutions. The original members of the cooperative, who lost their property after a violent takeover by a group around businessman Radovan Vitek in 1997, are asking the European Commission for help. They have estimated the damage at CZK 6 billion. The litigation has been going on for eleven years. In June this year, the Supreme Court granted the cooperatives’ request and returned the case to the court of first instance. At the same time, it pointed out shortcomings in the work of the previous courts. At that time, the group around Radovan Vitek allegedly recruited three thousand new members and with their help took control of the cooperative. Včela was later transformed into a joint-stock company. However, it too has already ceased operations this year. Its assets were transferred to Czech Property Investments and CPI Reality.
