Poor Slovaks aren’t because they spend a fifth of the country’s GDP, and gambling, drugs or alcohol are a sign of prosperity

Poor Slovaks? Our people “overspent” 21 billion euros in a year. This is up to a fifth of the entire GDP of the country

Contributions to the state budget exceeded the 300 million euro mark, compared to 50 million euros less the year before. Analysts explain the upward trend by the fact that people are starting to get better off financially and can afford more entertainment. Our municipalities are trying to push gambling to the periphery, and so are issuing general binding regulations in large numbers. The market regulator points out that this practice can reinforce illegal activity, which is difficult to control. If you’ve visited a bookmaker or tried your luck at the Lotto at least once in your life, you fall into the statistic that nine out of 10 adult Slovaks have tried gambling at least once. It’s even enough to buy a scratch card in addition to paying checks at the post office. Trying your luck and winning money seem to belong to our everyday life.
