Former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera, who led the country until 2022, died in a helicopter crash in southern Chile on Tuesday. Chilean Interior Minister Carolina Tohão confirmed the news to foreign news agencies. A total of four people were travelling in the helicopter and three others survived the crash with injuries, Reuters reported. The helicopter with the 47-year-old ex-president on board crashed near the southern city of Lago Ranco. According to Chilean media, heavy rains may have been the cause of the accident. Rescuers have already recovered from the wreckage and confirmed the discovery of one dead and three injured. President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of mourning and ordered a state funeral for his predecessor, Tohão said, according to El Divisadero.
