Physical punishment of children as a national sport, “disciplinary” slaps, or the sacred right to abuse and beat the weaker

Treading carefully around a ban on the “disciplinary” slap. A wording has been drafted that could pass.

Physical punishment of children has already been banned by almost all of Europe — and even by countries such as Turkmenistan. Lawmakers are now looking for ways to push through a ban on corporal punishment at home. Dozens of objections and stacks of letters have followed. The Geneva-based human rights committee and other international organizations have long warned the Czech Republic that it is now almost the last country in Europe that still has not prohibited physical punishment of children. Czech lawmakers have long rejected such legislation, arguing that a slap is the “sacred right” of every parent. After months of negotiations, the Ministry of Justice has now drafted cautious wording that labels violence against children as inappropriate and contrary to human dignity.
