Speculators have figured out a way to get big money out of homeowners who are in half with someone. They buy one of the co-owners’ half of the property cheaply and then blackmail the other owner into either buying their share dearly, or having problem tenants move into the house, or reselling it and having complications if they want to do anything to the house. There are hundreds of cases.
