Eight people killed and 34 others injured in fire at Hotel Olympik in Prague
The Olympik Hotel building has a capacity of 511 beds. At the time of the fire there were about 60 people in the rooms. It was extremely lucky that the fire didn’t start in the middle of the night. The balance of the fire in the night hours would have been far more shocking. Investigations have shown that the fire, which caused material damage worth some 40 million crowns, was caused by a breach of regulations. The refrigerator on the eleventh floor, in the maid’s room from where the flames spread, was lined with flammable material. The staff had placed towels and magazines on top of it.
