Not long after the end of the protests in Slovakia, the Czech government is also planning a mafia-style reform of the criminal code

White collar workers will not go to jail, they will ‘redeem themselves’. Experts and ministries criticize the amendment to the Criminal Code

The Ministry of Justice is preparing a reform of the Criminal Code, and it is being commented on by professional chambers, ministries and courts. The office, headed by Minister Pavel Blažek (ODS), has announced that it wants to reduce the number of prisoners who end up behind bars for minor crimes. However, it also significantly affects criminal rates in economic crime, which is more typical of so-called white-collar crimes. The courts could now impose significantly lighter sentences on them, even for large-scale property offences.

Fico stumbled. He planned “mafia” changes by Christmas, Pellegrini delays

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stumbled. The rapid changes in the judiciary, which he planned to push through by Christmas, have been put on hold thanks to pressure from the opposition and people at demonstrations. The new coalition wants to abolish the special prosecutor’s office, which investigates corruption crimes, and reduce penalties for corruption. This would help people linked to Smer-SD and its past governments. Fico’s voters also agree. So now he wanted to urgently abolish the special prosecutor’s office, which deals with corruption cases, and push for lower sentences for future convicted corrupt people.
