VOP Jičín modernizes Russian tanks for $5 million apiece
In September 2001, 140 units were already calculated. However, even this number was not definitive, because VOP Jičín 025 finally signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence on 30 November 2001 for the delivery of the first (and as it later turned out definitively) the last batch of 30 T-72M4 CZ tanks and 5 other sets of modernisation components. Then, the Novojičín company and the Ministry of Defence had to face difficult negotiations with subcontractors of the modernisation components about more than tenfold or fivefold reduction of the contract. The relevant contracts with foreign companies were finally signed on 25 March 2002. However, in the first quarter of 2003, the question of ordering one extra machine for the tank battalion commander was still open. In the end, even this consideration took its own course and the Ministry of Defence saved CZK 150 million. This is the price per unit for the first 10 tanks produced. Each of the next 20 machines will cost CZK 120 million.
